I'm going to be getting a pair of 7.1 (probably simulated, but still) headphones for gaming soon. That said, the headphones I'm looking at require a Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround Sound signal coming out of the optical port. I don't know if that requires me to get a dedicated sound card that has Dolby Digital _____ (not sure what version of Dolby Digital is required).
My motherboard has Realtek HD Audio, which can be "hacked" to unlock Dolby Digital Live, DTS Interactive, Dolby Home Theater, and DTS Neo: PC. I have no idea what those are, or if they will allow for a 7.1 signal from the optical. If I need a separate sound card, do any of you have suggestions?

I've borrowed a pair of Logitech G430 headphones, they're 7.1, work awesome and can use a USB port. Also reasonable at $80 or so.

I've read a bit on this (and it's kind of a mess) but consensus seems to be that optical TOSLINK only supports 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS. So using that interface, you might have issues getting 7.1 even if the audio chipset/codecs support it

How can they advertise it as 7.1 then? They explicitly state that it can do 7.1 through optical.

It seems to come down to a distinction of true discrete 7.1 vs virtualized. With the right codec it can probably push 5.1 through 7.1 channels. But apparently toslink doesn't have the requisite bandwidth for discrete 7.1 (which I find shocking since its fiber optic), but there are a lot of audio forum responses stating it to be the case
